Description
Description
For high-performance dinghy racing and aggressive hiking.
Fit Profile: Close, adaptive, barefoot feel.
The Hiking X Boot is the current generation of Zhik's dinghy hiking boots, replacing the older 360 and 560 range that became the standard choice for ILCA sailors over the past decade. If you're coming from one of those, the fit feels noticeably different, as the knitted stretch sock sits closer than moulded neoprene and moves more naturally with the foot. This gives you better feedback from the boat and less dead weight through a long race day.
The ZhikGrip II system works on the same principle as before, pairing with Zhik's hiking straps to keep you locked in at full power, but the Michelin Fibrelite outsole addresses the durability complaints that followed the older range.
Zhik Hiking X Boot Construction
The Zhik dinghy boots are built around a 3D knitted stretch sock rather than a neoprene upper. It wraps the foot closely and moves with it, which gives you more direct feedback from the deck than a stiffer boot allows. A low-profile Velcro ankle strap with an anti-slip channel and a webbing heel loop keep the fit locked in and make the boot quick to get on and off between races.
ZhikGrip II covers the top panel of the boot, bonded and stitched in place. It's designed to grip against hiking straps and the deck edge, keeping you planted when you're out on the wire at full load. The high-grip rubber sole handles wet deck surfaces reliably.
Zhik developed the outsole with Michelin using Fibrelite technology, which laminates fabric internally within the rubber. Durability was the main criticism levelled at earlier Zhik dinghy boots, particularly around sole delamination under hard use. The cold-cemented Fibrelite construction is built to hold up across multiple seasons rather than one, and it does so without the weight penalty you'd expect from a thicker rubber sole.
Stitched reinforcement around the toe box and a rubber-coated heel panel handle the abrasion from regular deck contact. Integrated drainage ports clear water quickly so the boot doesn't become heavy mid-race.

Recommended Add-On: Zhik Carbon Insole
The Zhik Carbon Insole is sold separately and fits directly into the Hiking X Boot. It uses Carbitex M3 Monoflex carbon fibre, which stays flexible when you're walking or launching but stiffens under load in the other direction when you're hiking. It's worth adding if you want more power transfer through the boot without a permanently rigid sole.
The Carbon Insole is sold separately, but if you're planning to add it anyway, the Hiking X Boot and Carbon Insole bundle works out more than £38 cheaper than buying both individually.
Zhik Dinghy Boots FAQs
How does the Zhik Hiking X Boot differ from standard neoprene sailing boots?
The knitted stretch sock fits closer and moves more naturally than neoprene, giving you better feedback from the boat and a lighter feel. It suits sailors who want direct contact with the deck rather than the insulation a thicker boot provides.
Is it suitable for walking on land?
Yes, the Michelin outsole of the Zhik boots is durable enough for normal use on land. If you're covering a lot of ground between races, the Carbon Insole helps as it flexes for walking but stiffens when you need it for hiking.
How does the drainage system work?
Drainage ports in the sole let water out quickly rather than letting it sit in the boot. It keeps the boot feeling light when conditions build and water starts coming over the deck.
What is Michelin Fibrelite technology?
Fibrelite laminates fabric inside the rubber of the outsole, which improves tear strength and resistance to wear without adding bulk. It's why the sole holds up to hard, repeated use better than a standard rubber outsole.
Does the boot offer ankle support?
It's designed for flexibility and ankle articulation rather than rigid support, which suits sailors who need to move freely on the boat. The Velcro strap and rubber heel panel keep the fit secure and protect against abrasion. If you need firm ankle support for aggressive hiking, the Zhik Performance High Cut Boot is worth looking at instead.
Size Chart
Size Chart

1. Place your foot on the ground with your heel against the wall and mark on the ground where your big toe ends.
2. Measure the distance from the wall to the mark.
3. Do this with both feet and use the measurement of the longest foot to find your correct size.
4. Select the size that is equal to or less than the length you measured.
5. Zhik only make these in full US sizes, no half sizes - this is given for info only
Important Info 2026
The Zhik 2026 dinghy boot range has moved to new lasts based on updated US sizing standards. You will not be the same size as your previous Zhik boots.
Please select your standard US shoe size, not your previous Zhik boot size.
All 2026 boots ship with a removable sole - this is intentional. This gives you three fitting options:
- Glue it in (recommended): Bonds permanently for a locked, performance fit. Use suitable boot adhesive and allow it to cure before use.
- Remove it entirely: Gains approximately half a size of extra room for thicker socks or wider feet.
- Upgrade to the Carbon X Insole: Replace with the Hiking X Carbon Insole for directional stiffness, enhanced power transfer, and injury prevention.
This system allows you to fine-tune the fit based on your preferences and intended use.
